Demorais 11/00-5/01: WebGain, Inc. -- Contractor via Entex, Santa Clara, CA I was brought in for what was supposed to be on a short term, part time basis by Corio to assist WebGain in their migration from a Unix Sendmail and POP mail system to an outsourced MicroSoft OutLook system. I was to assemble the current knowledge (aliases, mailing lists, mail boxes) to aid in their transfer. As time went on, I picked up other duties (news, VPN authentication, web server administration), general architecture of the second mail migration (back in-house), and also recommendations as to how to migrate all of their Unix services to NT servers. 1/99-10/00: Corio, Inc. -- Operations, Redwood City/San Carlos, CA As the solo system administrator for the first ten months, I designed, built, and maintained all of the Suns for operating an Application Service Provider. These included the internal servers for DNS, mail, backups, monitoring, and some engineering servers; and the production servers for running PeopleSoft-7 HR and FS under Oracle-8. It also involved working on aspects of security, networking, activation, upgrades, and capacity planning with the leads of other groups. By 10/00, there were over 300 databases across 40 machines (mostly e250s). one e4500 had 80 peoplesoft environments and databases running concurrently. By that time I was leading a team of three other system administrators and consulting with other groups on other aspects of operations (Siebel, SAP, Commerce-One, BroadVision, Monitoring, etc). 10/95-10/98: Cisco Systems, Inc. -- IS-WIT, San Jose, CA As a Senior Systems Administrator at Cisco, I was instrumental in providing the necessary Web Infrastructure to support www.cisco.com. When I joined the company, the web server was an SS20 running SunOS 4.1.3. It took 150 thousand hits daily and ran few business applications. Since then, the web server has expanded to become a much bigger machine which takes more than 6 million hits daily and does roughly 20 million dollars of electronic commerce every weekday. My contributions included defining and instituting procedures and policies to reduce errors that may lead to downtime; architecting the environment to reduce hardware and software failure possibilities; assisting the development community in developing more secure, reliable, and better performing code; developing capacity plans; providing on-call support; specifying, ordering, installing, and maintaining necessary hardware and software; monitoring for performance and security; writing tools to facilitate and automate various and sundry tasks. 2/94-7/95: Xerox Corporation -- CSS/IM, Webster, NY As Xerox moved towards operating their manufacturing business on Sun Servers running Oracle Applications, I was asked to help prove the viability of running this client/server environment for over 300 active users in a mission critical operation. I co-wrote a benchmark study that led to the establishment of a part of Xerox manufacturing running a large Oracle Database environment. The architecture that I implemented was to be applied throughout the world of Xerox and Rank Xerox. I set up demonstration environments in California, USA; Lille, France; and Marlow, UK. I led a small team of Intermediate-Senior System Administrators to create an environment that grew to manage 17 databases on 6 large servers (SS1000 and SC2000) using over 200GB of disk. The environments were available 24x7. Patrick R. Demorais 6/93-2/94: Xerox Corporation -- CSS/IM, Webster, NY As an Intermediate System Administrator, I managed a small network of Sun Sparc workstations. The culmination of this project was the deployment of production workstations in various locations in Webster and Rochester, NY; Toronto, Ontario; and Stamford, CT. These machines were used to help conduct meetings and had to be able to share data in real time with either remote printing or live screen updates. 5/91-3/93: Eastman Kodak Company -- ISPD, Rochester, NY. I was a System Administrator for a variety of departments within Kodak, the most notable of which was the Health Imaging Research Labs. In addition to performing Intermediate to Senior level activities, I was responsible for the recommendation and design of a Solbourne Multi-CPU Server to be used for high performance X-Ray Image Processing. I also designed and implemented the migration from a network of early generation desktop Sun-4s to this new network of X-terminals connected to the single large server. 9/87-2/91: GCA Tropel, Fairport, NY. First as a Co-op, then as an employee, I was the System Administrator of Sun-3s and -4s; Solbourne servers; Tropix and Tektronix workstations; and a variety of other computers. In addition to performing Junior to Intermediate SA activities, I wrote software to help automate some lens design functions and a device driver for the metrology department; coordinated the activities of a Co-op System Administrator; designed and implemented the migration to and installation of the new Solbourne computers for both the lens designers and the CAD engineers. 12/86-3/87: Atex Inc. (A Kodak Company), Bedford, MA. As a Co-op System Administrator, I was responsible for the installation, maintenance and general well being of a network of Sun-2s and -3s. Duties included setting up NIS (nee Yellow Pages) under SunOS 3.2, internetworking with other departments, and other traditional Junior level activities. Part of my time was also spent managing a number of PDP-11/34s running Atex's proprietary real time operating system. 9/85-12/86, 3/87-6/88: Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, NY. As a Co-op Programmer, I wrote software that helped run Physical Planning. The software was written on a DOS PC using Ashton Tate's all-in-one software package Framework.
